10th Phuket International Rugby Tens finals

Special report for Andaman News NBT (VHF dial) at 8.30am & local Cable TV channel 1 + maybe FM90.5 Radio Thailand 6pm, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, & possibly FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket, Tuesday 3rd June 2008 & http://thainews.prd.go.th/newsenglish/ Contact AndamanNews@yahoo.com

The Overgaard 10th Anniversary Phuket International Tens 2008 rugby tournament took place last weekend from Friday 30th May to the finals here on Sunday 1 June at Karon Stadium.
The Cup Final of the so-called ‘Coffin Dodgers’ or veterans tournament sponsored by Raimon Land was played first, as last year’s winners Extinct Volcanoes from the Philippines easily won 28-0 against Asian Japanese Dragons — in grey colour - to win the Weasel Cup.

The Plate Final of the Coffin Dodgers was next with Wanderers Wrinklies — in pink winning 12-0 against Cottesloe Old Gulls — in blue.

Then it was the highlight for most local Phuket supporters, as the host side Phuket Viagrabonds, led by organizer Patrick Cotter,
appeared in the Bowl Final of the Coffin Dodgers. Kicked all over in black and blue shirts, however they faced a quicker side from Bahrain Golden Oldies in black, who scored 3 good tries or touchdowns, effectively winning before half time
with the score at 0-19.
But Phuket were able to pull back with a welcome try in the second half, pleasing the large crowd of home supporters, to bring the final score up to 7-19.
Although they lost, the Phuket hosts enjoyed the game and friendly rivalry with plenty of humorous banter between the teams.
Patrick and the tournament was being filmed by International Rugby Board or IRB’s Total Rugby program to be shown later in 150 countries.

The Main Tournament among 24 younger teams then started for the Overgaard Clive Williamson memorial trophy with their Bowl Final, where Bucks Bunnies in black, lost to Balmoral Hellfish in white, with a final score of 12-19 (or was it other way round??).
Another highlight in the tournament was seeing the Thai Ba Bas or Barbarians mostly ex-national players from Bangkok, — here in blue — winning the main Plate Final beating Singapore Wanderers in red.
Despite a couple of bad injuries on the lighter Thai side, treated by doctor Richard Cracknall, and Phuket International Hospital’s Peter Davison,
they still went on to score more and win convincingly by 22-0 to please the local supporters.
Finally it was the main Cup Final for the two best teams in the tournament, Kukri Badgers from England in blue against Lok Odins fom Australia in yellow.
The Kukri Badgers egged on by English supporters scored one of the best tries of the day on the break.
They went on to score another great try in the second half of a tight match to win 12-5, to be crowned the 10th Champions.
The other great achievement of all the rugby teams and supporters was raising over 600,000 baht for local poor and orphaned children and students cared for by the Asia Center Foundation, in Phuket.
Their art pictures and essays on display at the Karon Stadium showed their talents and appreciation to the 10th Phuket Rugby Tens tournament. 10 out of 10 guys!

why do eng, scotland, northern ireland and wales have seperate football teams?

Posted on 27 Feb by The Editor | 11 Comments
sucking sux asked:

i might seem nuts to waste points by asking this question again but many political unions with devolved form of govt (the UK’s official status) including UAE and USA have only a single team to represent themselves at international sporting events. as a matter of fact in sports other than football, such as rugby, cricket and hockey, northern ireland and the republic of ireland are represented by a single team (simply named ireland) despite them being 2 distinct political entities (unlike the UK i might add, which is recognised as a single political entity). any answers???????????????????????????????????

Is this an accurate description of AFL?

Posted on 23 Feb by The Editor | 25 Comments
MANU4EVAR asked:

Short for Australian Football League, an obscure suburban sport played in southern areas of Australia. Previously called the Victorian Football League, or Victorian Rules Football.

Before each game, teams must run through banners constructed entirely of toilet paper and clag glue and containing messages such as ‘Go the Roo Boys’ or other such crap.

Playing uniform is similarly macabre. Each player must wear a singlet, shoes, socks and shorts so tight, if they were any tighter they’d need bowel surgery to remove them.

AFL is the only sport in the world which rewards people for failure, with one point given for missing a shot at goal, or hitting one of the large goal posts, or if an opposing player runs the ball between the goals.

Despite what any AFL follower will tell you, it is slightly above watching grass grow in terms of an entertainment spectacle. It does not have any significant following outside of the Australian states of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, with the more open-minded Australians (i.e. New South Wales and Queensland) preferring Rugby League and Rugby Union. Even drawf-tossing is more popular in these states.

The first International AFL World Cup was held in 2003 in Melbourne. There were more players on the field than spectators in the stands. Nobody remembers who won. Nauru are a powerhouse in World AFL, as well as Denmark, who hold the non-Australian attendance record for a game of AFL - 62. (That’s sixty-two, not sixty-two thousand).

In order to play AFL, it is compulsory to do or have done one of these:

* Bonk your best mate’s wife
* Urinate on a lady’s leg at a pub
* Own a copy of ‘Up There Cazaly’
* Have a name such as Wayde, Rhett, Jarred or Digby
* Steal from your team-mates
* Be an accessory to the death of a young lady by drug over-dose
* Be totally ignorant
* Keep a closed mind
According to a study by Sydney’s Macquarie Univerity, you are more likely to get stabbed going to one game of Aussie Rules a year, than you are if you go to a nightclub every Saturday night for a year.

Thankfully the AFL-friendly media here in Australia manage to do a good job of covering this up.
